Steel structures, spacemen, migratory birds, and shrieking children – what do they all have in common? In Tang Yeok Khang’s art they converge to produce a surprising yet credible view of the modern world in motion.
The evolution of Tang Yeok Khang as an artist started before he exchanged his hometown, an idyll of rolling glades, for the inconstant urban setting of Kuala Lumpur. As a young artist, he had dabbled in conventional landscape-painting and soon discovered that its regimented ways did not suit his restive character. Not able to capture his true artistic character, he wandered through the wasteland of unproductivity for a period of time. His move to the capital in the mid-90s finally brought about changes he had not foreseen…

The Unseen
By Edward Ong (for Pheh It Hao’s works)

In a world that subsists on hyperboles, there is no denying the significance and importance of size. Sheer size and all its colourful connotations – power, vitality, efficiency, splendour – entered our psyche and marked out their territory as we were collectively sleepwalking through life. The universal language of today is thus a language of over-exaggeration; of intimidation: My skyscraper is 50 metres higher than yours; my fully CGI-generated movie cost three times as much to produce than yours; my faith is truer than yours – and so on and so forth. It would naturally be a misinterpretation to think this Guinness-World-Records Culture has come to define who we are. For the contrary is true. It is human nature to take notice only of the brilliant and the exceptional. There is no place in our imagination for what we perceive as mundane. The less said about the unappealing, the better. Hence, it is we who have conditioned ourselves to see only the obvious.
And so it is in the very human world of Art…
